Guangdong champions new industry model

A driverless robotaxi glides through the streets of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, slowing to pick up a passenger before merging back into traffic. Roughly 70 kilometers away in Dongguan, robotic arms work in harmony on an assembly line, while in Shenzhen, an engineer uploads a circuit design to an online platform, and within hours the first prototype is already entering production.   Though these technologies appear to belong to different industries, they share one thing in common: many are being developed by private enterprises from Guangdong, China’s largest provincial economy and one…

Humanoid robots enter mass market

As leading Chinese humanoid robot makers unveil increasingly affordable models, advances in manufacturing, supply chain localization and growing production volumes are pushing the sector into a new phase of commercial adoption. Unitree Robotics recently launched its dual-arm humanoid robot R1 with a starting price of 26,900 yuan ($3,968), making it the company’s most affordable humanoid robot to date. Earlier, Noetix Robotics introduced its Bumi robot for 9,998 yuan, becoming one of the first consumer-oriented humanoid robots priced below the 10,000-yuan threshold. Around the same time, Booster Robotics also launched its…

Effective implementation of Eco code

A comprehensive overhaul of existing laws and regulations is underway to ensure the accurate and effective implementation of the Ecological and Environmental Code, an official from China’s top court said. On Friday, coinciding with World Environment Day, Yang Linping, vice-president of the Supreme People’s Court, said at a news conference that she and her colleagues are aligning, revising and abolishing current judicial interpretations and guidelines in the ecological and environmental sector with the new code, which will take effect on Aug 15. “We’re also drafting new judicial interpretations of the…

World’s highest solar thermal power plant

The world’s highest-altitude tower-type solar thermal power plant, located in Amdo county in the Xizang autonomous region, has completed the installation of its mirrors – 15,927 of them – marking a major milestone toward grid-connected power generation later this year, Xizang Daily reported. The 100-megawatt solar thermal power station, built by Xizang Development Investment Group, is the first power plant of its kind in Xizang. The project is part of the region’s key energy development plan for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) and belongs to a broader 750MW solar…

Chinese robot applications

With China firmly at the forefront of artificial intelligence and robotics, the nation’s technology companies are targeting opportunities in the global rehabilitation sector as advances in Chinese robotics gain increasing recognition worldwide, experts and business executives said at a recent summit. The Global Rehabilitation & Assistive Technology Network Summit 2026 convened in Shanghai on May 13, offering a platform to showcase real-world application scenarios of breakthrough technologies. Chinese scientists set new world record in quantum computing

Chinese scientists have developed a programmable quantum computing prototype called “Jiuzhang 4.0” that has set a new world record for optical quantum information technology, according to a study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.   Led by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the team used the prototype to solve the Gaussian boson sampling problem at a speed more than 10 to the 54th times that of the world’s most powerful supercomputer, the study said. The researchers said they manipulated and detected quantum states of up to…

China’s 17th manned space mission

China’s next crewed space mission, the Shenzhou XXIII, is scheduled to be launched in the coming days to transport three astronauts to the Tiangong space station, according to the China Manned Space Agency. The Shenzhou XXIII spacecraft and its carrier — a Long March 2F rocket — were moved to the service tower at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China’s Gobi Desert on Saturday morning, the agency said in a brief news release, adding that launch equipment at the spaceport “are in good condition”. The release noted that…

Drones transport saplings in Lanzhou, China’s Gansu

A drone transports a sapling at a park in Lanzhou, Northwest China’s Gansu province, April 27, 2026. Over the past few days, several drones shuttle back and forth over more than 2,300 mu (about 153 hectares) of barren hills here to accurately lift saplings and efficiently assist afforestation operations. The local natural resources and planning bureau said that compared with the traditional manual operation, the drones were more suitable for the complex terrain, safer and more time-saving for transporting saplings.

Shanghai aims to ‘unlock’ big ideas of AI

At an auto plant in Puebla, a historic city in central Mexico, a digital system introduced this year by a Chinese company has significantly improved production efficiency. The system’s provider is Black Lake Technologies, an industrial internet company based in Shanghai’s Changning district. Founded in 2016, Black Lake is currently developing industrial-grade artificial intelligence agents and actively expanding its overseas customer base, promoting a new “Made-in-China” model of intelligent manufacturing abroad. In the domestic market, the company also has big ambitions. “There are 5 million factories across China, but Black…
